MARGAO: A blast in a rented premises at Sao Jose de Areal village on the outskirts of Margao triggered by a country-made crude bomb, claimed the life of a 30-year-old native of Hubli and injured four persons, including the wife, his two children and a woman from next door.
Police sources said around 50 crude bombs, which are normally used for killing animals, were scattered around the place where the deceased was lying in a pool of blood.
The low intensity blast triggered by a country-made crude bomb ripped open the roof of the rented premises, killing Paplu Mulgund on the spot. His two children, who were playing outside the house along with a boy from next door, also sustained multiple injuries. The wife of the deceased, who was also outside the house, escaped without any major injuries, while a woman from the neighbourhood, who had just gone to the house of the deceased, sustained injuries on her eye. They were rushed to the Hospicio, where the family of the deceased are convalescing at the hospital. While late in the evening, the woman neighbour was shifted to the GMC.
While the State police swooped into Margao, led by the Director General of Police, T N Mohan and SP Crime Karthik Kashyap, to guide the Maina-Curtorim police in the investigations, teams from Central agencies are likely to arrive on Friday.
Meanwhile, a team will be sent to Hubli to verify the antecedents of the deceased.
In a late night development, police personnel from different police stations from Margao have been called to assist with the investigation and to beef up security.
The incident took place at around 4.10 pm when the landlady Elsa Fernandes, who had just finished clearing leaves and waste scattered at the entrance to her house, was rattled by a loud sound from her rented premises, located right opposite her house. Instantly, the deceased lay dead, with his face blown to pieces, while his two minor children – a son and daughter – sustained multiple injuries.
Police probing the blast case, suspect that the deceased Mulgund must have been entering the house with the crude bombs, when one of these accidentally went off. Though no one had seen the deceased entering the house, it is suspected that he must have taken the consignment from his van, parked around 10 meters away, and was heading inside his house when the crude bomb exploded.
The intensity of the blast was such that a mangled aluminium piece landed right in the courtyard of the landlady, around 25-30 meters from the rented premises.
Inquiries revealed that the deceased along with his family had moved into the rented premises only a month ago. The police have established contacts with the office of the police commissioner, Hubli to verify the antecedents of the deceased.
Senior police officials and the Bomb Disposal Squad rushed to the blast site along with a sniffer police dog to investigate into the explosion. Velim MLA Benjamin D’Silva also visited the spot to take stock of the situation.
Meanwhile, acting South Goa district police chief Karthik Kashyap late Thursday night said the police are probing into all angles into the Areal bomb blast case, saying that central agencies are coming down to Goa to further investigate into the case.
“We do not rule out anything at this stage. The police are probing into all possible angles,” Kashyap said late Thursday evening, even as he said that a clear picture might emerge on Friday noon or evening.
When asked whether the Goa police have informed the NIA or other central agencies about the bomb blast and the ongoing investigations, he replied in positive, saying that sleuths of the central investigating agencies have been intimated about the incident. “We expect officials of the central agencies to descend in Goa to investigate into the bomb blast case,” he added.
Meanwhile, the police are compiling the names of persons who used to call on the deceased at his rented residence. Sources said the police have already identified some persons, including 1-2 locals, who may throw some light in the blast case.
